MARIA KLONARIS is
a media artist and film maker, born in Cairo.
KATERINA THOMADAKI is a media artist and
film maker, born in Athens. She is a lecturer at Université Paris
I, Sorbonne, Department of Aesthetics and Sciences of Art.
Based in Paris since 1975, MARIA KLONARIS
and KATERINA THOMADAKI became actively engaged in the French experimental
film movement of the late ‘70s, early ‘80s. As film makers, they created
and theorised "Cinéma Corporel" [Cinema of the Body], with retrospectives
at the Centre Pompidou (1980) and at the Cinémathèque française
(1992) amongst others.
Exploring the relations between still
and moving images in expanded cinema performances, they later created multi-media
installations and environments of projections - Biennale de Paris (1982)
Fondation Joan Miro (1990) Athens Pinacotheque (1994) etc.
Their photography-based works have been
presented in such prestigious events as Electra (Paris, Musée d¹Art
Moderne, 1983), Les Immateriaux (Paris, Centre Pompidou, 1985), Mois de
la Photo (Paris, 1996), Engel:Engel (Wiener Kunsthalle and Rudolfinum Gallery,
Prague, 1997). In situ installations involving a wide range of media (film,
video, paint-box graphics, light-objects, sound) have been specifically
created in ancient buildings (Madrid, 1992, Offenes Kulturhaus, Linz, 1994)
or derelict places (Hornsey Road Baths, London, 1992).
Maria Klonaris’ and Katerina Thomadaki’s
work investigates themes such as the Feminine, the Hermaphrodite and the
Angel. Crossing media, they develop a transcultural reflection on the body,
memory, the unconscious, archetypal myths and contemporary identities.
They have collaborated with Radio France
Culture's Atelier de Creation Radiophonique since 1982; published many
texts and manifesti, and have organised RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES ART
CINEMA / VIDEO / ORDINATEUR since 1990.
